Raccoon Odor: Causes and How to Remove the Smell

Raccoon Odor: Causes and How to Remove the Smell

Despite their innocent looking, cute little faces, raccoons actually have quite a reputation for being mischievous and destructive. Raccoons often knock down trashcans, uproot gardens, and sod in search of a meal. Raccoons may also carry and transmit diseases such as rabies or roundworm. Raccoons are capable of becoming aggressive and biting humans or other animals when they are rabid or feel threatened.

When raccoons live in an attic, they defecate and urinate inside the attic. Sometimes they actually confine the bulk of the waste in a concentrated latrine area, but oftentimes they spread it all over the place. The feces are what you have to worry about more - they could contain raccoon roundworm. However, the urine is often what causes the stronger overall odor in the attic. Plus, the urine can soak through insulation and get on the wood or sheetrock, where it can stain.

Step-by-step process of removing raccoons smell

  • Remove raccoons and their babies. Loud music over extended periods sometimes work well.
  • The key to successful odor removal is to get to the source of the smell.
  • Remove the nest and feces as well as any urine soaked insulation.
  • Saturate the whole area with a multipurpose cleaner like LiquaSan, leave it to dry. If the problem persists, repeat it again. LiquaSan works great under load and you will start to notice a difference right away.`
  • Before closing up the area, tuck in and activate the appropriate amount of vapor kits.
  • Ensure the area being treated is sealed. Painters tape around any doors or cracks works great! Make sure sunlight is restricted so we recommend that a minimum of 12 hours overnight is used.
  • Remove vapor packs the next day being very careful not to spill any access liquid that may be in the tray.
  • For best results in confined, limited access spaces, leave the vapor kits in and simply close up the space.

Important Note: If you suspect a female raccoon or her litter may still be trapped inside your home, seal all entry points but one. This one existing opening will serve as an exit through which you can wait for the raccoon or raccoons to leave the structure before sealing it off. If you seal off ALL openings while a raccoon still exists inside, it may become trapped where you are unable to get to it and proceed to starve to death, resulting in a foul-smelling carcass. If there is a litter trapped inside and you seal the mother out, the litter will die and the mother will be inhumanely kept from her young. Be sure there are no raccoons left inside the structure before sealing off the last opening.

PREVENTION OF RACCOONS FROM YOUR HOME

If proper care is not taken, it can lead to a raccoon taking up residence in your attic or an outbuilding so that it can be close to its food. You will need to make sure that the raccoon has no reason to hang around your home. Make sure that you do not leave pet food out, particularly at night when a raccoon will be foraging. If you feed your pets outdoors, remove the food after the animal has eaten so that there won’t be any left around for a hungry raccoon.
